15-second flash charging comes to Swiss buses

IDG News Service | Sep 6, 2016

It takes these electric buses less time to recharge than it does to pick up passengers thanks to flash charging technology developed by ABB.

Engineers in Switzerland have designed an electric bus that can recharge in 15 seconds!

It’s called Flash Charging and works like this:

A laser guided arm sends 600 kilowatts of power into onboard batteries

The charge gives the bus enough power to reach the next station

where it recharges again

When it’s back at base, a full charge takes only 4-5 minutes

The buses don’t need overhead lines and are silent and emission free

By 2018, 12 electric buses will connect Geneva’s airport to suburban Geneva

The line carries more than 10,000 passengers a day

Experts say the e-buses could save as much as 1,000 tons of CO2 per year

when compared with diesel buses
