Michael A. Wisler, 2014 Honoree

Managing vice president of IT
Capital One Financial
Richmond, Va.
Coolest current project:
I am really excited to be a part of transforming our workforce, insourcing software development and elevating engineering in our culture. We are hiring the best software talent, implementing agile, defining career paths and tightening our partnership with the business.
How do you evaluate emerging technologies?
We have built a culture that is flexible and can test and deploy new technologies rapidly. Through Capital One Labs, we are able to test the viability of new technologies and pilot developmental products. The lab is crucial in keeping pace with changing banking technology and allows us to test and learn (and exit) many emerging technologies that are vying to win in the mobile space.
How are you building an IT department for the future?
The future is all about our talent. Software development is a core competency and a highly valued skill at Capital One. This focus means elevating the talent we have, insourcing and creating the right environments (tools, career paths) to be successful. We are grooming tech expertise from the ground up -- and attracting talent that is great at software development.
