Information systems division chief
Employer
U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center
Location
Elizabeth City, N.C.
A career highlight:
On Aug. 29, 2005, I commanded a Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina had just demolished the city's floodwalls forcing thousands of citizens to the rooftops. I completed numerous rescues and received the Air Medal for my contribution.
How many times have you had to reinvent yourself in your career?
Two times during my career. As a military-trained helicopter pilot, I studied industrial engineering at Purdue University so I could manage the Coast Guard's supply chain. After that, I attended National Defense University for my CIO certificate so I could supervise the IT division.
A recent example of your leadership style:
I commonly rely on persuasion not positional power. I listen to the needs of my staff and I encourage their growth on a personal and professional level. I use this style daily to improve the work climate and the productivity of my employees.
