Angela K. Miller, 2012 Honoree

Chief technology officer and chief sustainability officer
North County Transit District
Oceanside, Calif.
Coolest current project:
We are piloting installation of solar panels in unused rail right-of-way. My philosophy was that smart buildings, smart grids and alternative power generation was nothing more than technology that could be part of our scope, so I wrote grants and received funding to make it happen.
What characteristic is most important to you in an IT hire?
I seek contributors with a passion for taking things apart and understanding how they function. During one set of interviews, I made prospects assemble Lego Bionicles as they answered interview questions. The most important technology skills are problem solving and understanding how things work.
