Why you want to work there

This Boston-based healthcare company makes it a habit to listen to its employees. Employee feedback spurred creation of annual "Career Conversations" between employees and their managers to ensure that career goals are discussed and specific actions are taken to assist employees with their goals. Those conversations are distinct from the performance management process, when managers can request that employees develop additional skills that are needed in their current jobs or for new roles. In Career Conversations, the focus is entirely on what the employee wants for his career, not what the business needs. Employees participating in this program receive up to 40 hours yearly to pursue the actions specified in their plans. Eye on retirement The Cash Balance Retirement Plan, fully company-funded, establishes an account for eligible employees, with an annual amount based on age, pay and length of service. Contributions range from 3.5% to 11% of pay and grow in value through interest credits that are guaranteed to be at least 5% annually. Employees are vested in the full value of their accounts if they complete at least 1,000 hours in each of three calendar years without a break in service. Depending on the account value when an employee leaves, they may receive part or all of it as a lump sum and the balance, if any, as a monthly benefit.
