Why you want to work there

Diversity is a big issue at this company, which has operations in more than 40 countries and employees in 80 offices throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. Employees at this Chicago-based multibank holding company can contribute to diversity and inclusion through their participation in various Business Resource Councils, including the Advancing Professionals Resource Council (for junior-level professionals), the Asian Leadership Council, the Black Business Resource Council and others. Membership across all resource councils is about 3,900 employees, or nearly 30% of the workforce. The company also offers multiple Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Councils -- one within each of the business units -- through which leaders across the globe help ensure that there is a focus on diversity and inclusion throughout all initiatives. To help narrow potential communication gaps with clients and colleagues and increase cultural competency, in 2009 Northern Trust's Global Diversity & Inclusion team began offering employees free access to the RosettaStone language training program. Today there are approximately 600 participants in the program, 104 of whom are in the IT department, learning one of 25 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Hindi and Spanish.
