Why you want to work there

Top 10 ranking: No. 8 for retention This Nashville-based for-profit hospital operator, the largest in the U.S., knows that career development isn't a one-size-fits-all endeavor. IT employees are offered a wide array of training programs, many of which are in the company's online catalog of more than 1,500 courses. These courses, delivered in a variety of formats -- including in-person instructor-led classes, Web-based training and self-study modules -- focus on cultural, behavioral and managerial subject matter as well as technical topics. The IT department has also launched a new career development initiative called the Emerging Leaders Program, which prepares high-potential employees for future roles as, for example, directors, assistant vice presidents or division CIOs. The program includes mentoring, individualized development plans, job shadowing, graduate-level instruction, enhanced communication training and teaching opportunities. It lasts up to three years for each participant, depending on the individual's needs and progress. Engrossing jobs Through HCA's IT Healthcare Connection program, select IT employees visit the company's healthcare delivery facilities in order to gain an understanding and appreciation of the effect that their technical work has on patient care. For several days, IT employees are taken into hospitals, where they follow physicians, nurses and technicians and get an inside look at the daily activities of the facility. The company spends an average of $2,700 per employee for professional development each year; that figure includes payments for curriculum and instructors, plus the value of the work time devoted to training. In addition to all of the organizationwide resources available, individuals can also choose to attend outside classes or conferences. Health nuts Through HCA's Healthy Work Environment initiative, employees are offered wellness credits of up to $500 to supplement their health insurance coverage.
