Why you want to work there

Top 10 ranking: No. 10 for training, No. 7 for retention In 2009, this data-processing and billing service in Lake St. Louis, Mo., made its flexible work arrangement program official: Employees can now choose to telecommute or work compressed workweeks as long as the needs of their business units are met. A company of givers: Through the Benevolence Committee, NISC employees are invited to contribute any dollar amount they wish to an internal charitable fund through payroll deductions. NISC matches that money, and a committee administers the fund. The money raised is used to help employees and their families in times of need or to buy savings bonds for children of NISC employees. The company also matched donations that employees made to the American Red Cross following the earthquake in Haiti, and it supports United Way campaigns and organizes an annual LiveStrong Day to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Employees volunteer monthly at local food banks and provide school supplies to children of families in need. The company also makes sure its employees are compensated fairly: Staffers are given performance review scores as part of their annual performance evaluations and receive pay increases based on those scores and their ranking within their salary band. Plus, employees receive bonuses if the company exceeds its budgeted profit margin for a given fiscal year. Also, vice presidents can award discretionary bonuses to employees who go above and beyond. New this year: NISC's IT learning center launched soft skills training sessions and instruction in the use of specific software applications, as well as a formalized mentoring program. New hires are assigned mentors to help them develop the skills they need for their jobs.
