American Express Co.

New York [Middle Atlantic]

Why you want to work there

This New York-based credit card company, which is also one of the world's largest travel agencies, is planning for the future and keeping its talent close at hand. With more and more IT employees nearing retirement age, the company launched the American Express Technologies Retiree Network in 2008. Through the network, the IT division can retain retirees' knowledge, experience and expertise by offering them the opportunity to continue working in a professional and intellectually active environment. The company set up a secure, Internet-based community where registered retirees can list their contact information and areas of expertise and make themselves available for short-term assignments as mentors, trainers and more. The network also gives retirees a place to learn about company news, special offers and company-sponsored and community volunteer events. By the close of 2009, 30% of eligible retirees had joined the network. IT is special: The IT department's AET Excellence awards recognize individuals who go above and beyond expectations, consistently achieve outstanding results, demonstrate exceptional leadership in their various roles and personify the company's values. The annual companywide Chairman's Award for Innovation program recognizes and rewards employee teams that use innovation to redefine American Express. IT employees were on four of the five teams that won 2009 Chairman's Awards for Innovation, which recognized projects completed in 2008; the five winners were chosen from an original field of 310 teams that entered the competition and 20 that made it to the final round.
