Basking Ridge, N.J. [Middle Atlantic]

Why you want to work there

Top 10 ranking: No. 2 for training The IT team at this Basking Ridge, N.J., telecommunications company took on a gargantuan task last year: integrating recently acquired Alltel's 10 million customers into the Verizon Wireless system in just over 11 months. It was the largest subscriber migration in the company's history. Training plays a big role in ensuring that employees are ready to tackle such projects: From Day One, every employee can take advantage of educational resources such as online training, instructor-led courses and $8,000 a year in tuition assistance. At the beginning of each year, IT managers meet with employees to formalize their development plans, which include 12 days of training per employee. The CIO reviews the results of that training on a quarterly basis. Benefits bonanza: Health and wellness benefits include medical, prescription drug and vision coverage; dental plans; basic life insurance coverage; and flexible spending accounts. In February, employees received short-term incentive bonuses, and in March, they received profit-sharing payments at the targeted amount of 3% of their salaries. In April, they received merit raises, resulting in an average 3.5% increase in base pay. The company also participates in annual benchmarking studies that assess knowledge, skills and compensation levels while evaluating job categories and titles. As a result of such studies, 210 IT employees received additional salary increases in the form of job enrichments, temporary assignments or promotions, with average salary bumps ranging from 5% to 10%. A program called "Recognizing You!" rewards employees nominated by management for exemplary performance. This program's awards range in value from $25 to $1,000, in the form of gift certificates to more than 350 restaurants, retailers and entertainment venues nationwide. In 2009, 1,139 IT employees were recognized and received a total of more than $200,000 rewards.
