Q&A: NearForm CCO Larry Breen on contacting-tracing apps

Contact-tracing apps have long been touted as the key to getting coronavirus infection rates under control – and remote workers safely back to the office. But few of the apps have been successful so far. NearForm's Larry Breen explained the challenges of getting to success.

"Interoperability is a real key issue. We’ve been delivering these solutions for each country and when it came to the island of Ireland, we wanted to ensure whole inter-country interoperability. This means that people with the Republic of Ireland HSE contract-tracing app could travel north of the border into Northern Ireland and continue to be covered when they come back because we've created an interoperability the connection between the two governments. The systems are actually talking.

"That's something that is available to all of our customers. We're working with a bunch of other countries within Europe to map out how that looks so we can deal with the whole of Europe when it starts to open up. If you’re in England, you'll have the NHS app in your pocket, I'll have an HSE one in my pocket but when we're travelling around, we’ll still get that level of coverage.

"We're also doing likewise in the multiple states going live in the U.S., we've created that interoperability so they can all work together. We’re also working with the APHL (Association of Public Health Laboratories), which is a federal service that will cover all 50 states.

"Ultimately, we will also then start looking at trying to connect larger regions like Europe to the U.S., although that doesn't need to happen immediately because movement of people across continents is very small at the minute. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, the world will start to come back to some semblance of new normal and interoperability is going to be at the heart of it."
