Vodafone to sell extra data to heavy smartphone users

Vodafone announced new data add-ons for mobile phone plans aimed at customers planning to exceed their monthly data limit.

The telco will offer 12-month and month-to-month data add-on plans. Under the 12-month option, customers can buy an extra 300MB for $5 per month for one year. Larger add-ons provide 1GB for $10 per month, 2.5GB for $20 per month or 4GB for $30 per month.

Customers who don’t need additional data every month can purchase data on a month-to-month basis, but they include half as much data. These add-ons provide 150MB for $5, 500MB for $10, 1.25GB for $20 and 2GB for $30.

Vodafone said the release of the data add-on plans was spurred by the rollout of Vodafone’s 4G network. Vodafone said that in the US, 4G users have used 36 per cent more data than 3G users. In South Korea, 4G users used 132 per cent more data than 3G users, Vodafone said.

As required by the Telecommunications Consumer Protection (TCP) code, Vodafone also provides SMS warnings when customers reach 50 per cent, 85 per cent and 100 per cent of their data limits.

”With on-the-go internet usage growing at an exponential rate, it’s vital our customers are able to use the internet, social media and apps, safe in the knowledge they will not be hit with an unexpected high bill at month’s end,” Vodafone chief customer officer Craig Reines said in statement.

“The last thing we want is for our customers who are using their smartphone on our superfast 4G network to have the fun taken out of it by worrying about whether they’ve gone over their data allowance.”
