Hyper Drive disintermediates tyre retailers

Online retailer Hyper Group', operator of the Hyper Drive online car tyre and accessory business, says sales were up significantly on the prior year and that it has seen a steep increase in sales of tyres to new customers. However it has revealed no sales figures.

The company’s announcement came the day after the CEO of NZX listed Warehouse Group was reported saying that the inevitable —and likely imminent — arrival of online retailing giant Amazon into Australia would have significant impact on the New Zealand market in addition to stripping $4 billion to $5 billion out of Australia's retail market, by giving customers much faster service than they can presently get from Amazon in the US or UK.

And Amazon is not the only threat. China’s online retailing giant Albibaba in February opened an office in Melbourne to serve the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Hyper Drive said its experience suggests online tyre retailing is being taken up quicker than other sectors like travel and banking, because it has made tyre buying and fitting easy.

Hyper Drive says it works with over 200 independent garages throughout the country which are able to fit tyres that its customers order online.
