InternetNZ formalises absorption of NZRS

InternetNZ has formalised its absorption of NZRS, the registry and operator for .nz domain names.

The changes follow the results ofthe organisational review, announced in October that called for the InternetNZ group to be structured around two legal entities – Internet New Zealand Inc, and Domain Name Commission Ltd. NZRS was be disestablished and all NZRS staff, assets and functions moving to InternetNZ.

The scope of the Domain Name Commission was to be reduced, with responsibility for .nz policy development being assigned to InternetNZ leaving DNCL responsible for regulation and dispute resolution and will provide significant input to changes to .nz policy.

Announcing the formalisation of the new structure InternetNZ Group CEO, Jordan Carter, said the merger marked an important shift for the Internet space in New Zealand, and had been designed to slimline governance and deliver more for the Internet and for New Zealanders.

"NZRS has a proud record of innovation, service delivery and contributing to the Internet both here and globally, and that foundation is an essential part of the new InternetNZ we’re building this year,” Carter said.

He said the new organisation would build on the strengths of the three former entities mdash; InternetNZ, NZRS and DNCL mdash; to deliver more for the New Zealand Internet community and to face the inevitable challenges as the potential of the Internet grows.

"The work InternetNZ does is important, and as the Internet plays a bigger role in all our lives, our work will continue to reflect that,” he said.

“We speak on behalf of New Zealanders who use the Internet, and the services we offer are essential for Kiwis who want to make the most of a free and open Internet.

Carter, the former head of InternetNZ was appointed to the group CEO role in December 2017 after recruitment consultancy JacksonStone Partners had been engaged “to conduct a thorough external and internal selection process.”

Carter said: "I’m not taking these reigns lightly or on my own, we have strong foundations that we will continue to build on. hellip; This year, we will bring our organisations together and take a close look at our strategy. Our job is to serve our community and customers with leading technology, community support and fresh policy ideas. That will remain our focus.”
