CSIRO transforms 2D faces into 3D models

The CSIRO has filed patents for a device that detects human faces in 2D photos and turns them into 3D images.

'Smart Vision' uses algorithms to turn images from laptop and mobile device cameras into 3D models.

CSIRO researchers are able to track up to 66 points on people’s faces to create the 3D image.

“The technology calculates size so unlike other virtual try-on technologies, customers can try on and view products from any angle – perfectly scaled to their face,” Simon Lucey, group research leader for CSIRO’s Digital Productivity and Services Flagship, said in a statement.

The product has been licensed to online eyeware retailer glasses.com. The retailer will use the technology to develop an interactive app to let customers see how glasses fit without needing to physically visit a shop.

The software will allow customers to see a 180-degree view of their face to understand how a pair of glasses will fit and compare front-on and side-on images of themselves. The technology will also allow users to move the glasses up and down the bridges of their noses.

“We didn't want to just replicate the offline shopping experience – we wanted to improve it. Throughout the development stages, we've worked to create a tool that's so true-to-life it’s not only fun, but actually useful in making a purchasing decision,” Jonathan Coon, CEO of glasses.com, said in a statement.

“Up until now, augmented reality was something of a parlour trick. It was fun but just not accurate or easy enough to be useful.

"Our hope is that the glasses.com app will be to augmented-reality shopping what ‘Toy Story’ was for computer-generated animated films – it’s just the beginning,” he said.
