What is NBNco?

The National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co) is a company established by the Government to operate the NBN network. The company will operate on a wholesale-only, open access basis and is overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The Government's initial investment in the company will be funded through the existing Building Australia Fund and the proposed issuance of Aussie Infrastructure Bonds.

Initially, the Government will be the majority shareholder in NBN Co, with the private sector being able to invest up to 49 per cent in equity (cash or asset contributions). The intention is to draw on private sector capacity and expertise, but restrict private ownership to protect the Government's objective of operating a wholesale open-access network. The Government estimates that it will begin selling its share in NBN Co within five years once the network is built and fully operational, subject to market conditions and identity security considerations.
