Telematics improve ambulance drivers' safety by 92%

An NHS ambulance provider has reported improved safety since installing telematics to monitor its drivers.

Arriva Transport Solutions’ (ATSL) ambulance fleet has reduced unsafe driving patterns like harsh braking, acceleration and cornering by 92 percent over six months.

The fleet transports over 4,000 non-emergency NHS patients, including the vulnerable and elderly, across the UK daily, so smooth, safe patient journeys are crucial for good customer service.

ATSL installed the Masternaut Connect platform which includes an in-vehicle light bar which alerts drivers when they are driving poorly. If drivers continually drive below safety standards, ATSL can call them in for additional training.

It installed the black boxes in 480 ambulances across Greater Manchester, East and West Midlands and the South West, including London.

Additionally, the company has seen a cost reduction with the help of a fuel-monitoring module.

Reduction in 'idle driving'

Idle driving, which can result in huge fuel costs for ATSL, has reduced across the fleet by 70 percent, the transport provider said.

Combined with reducing harsh driving events, this has led to a reduction in fuel costs for the business.

Steve Law, head of Fleet and Estates, Arriva Transport Solutions said: “As a provider of patient transport services in the UK, Arriva Transport Solutions needs to make sure that the experience we offer our poorly and often elderly patients is a high quality one. Our drivers are highly skilled and undergo extensive training for their role but they are now more aware than ever of their driving behaviour and how this can positively, or negatively impact patient experience.

“We were one of the first companies in the UK to use the [Metronaut] system and we’ve really seen the benefits of telematics. Not only does it help tracking vehicles but it crucially for us improves the patients’ experience of the service we provide, which ultimately impacts on their wellbeing.”
