SMEs win just half of G-Cloud sales so far

Just over half - 53 percent - of total spending via the G-Cloud framework so far has gone to SMEs, according to the latest figures.

The public sector spent £25 million through the framework in June, pushing total spending to date up to £217 million, according to a blog post on GOV.UK by engagement lead Raphaëlle Heaf. The sales total stood at £192 million at the end of May, up from £180 million in April.

Despite the increased figures, a recent report by the Institute for Government showed that the bulk of government IT spending is still funnelled to large incumbents through large long-term contracts.

The government spent £80 million with six IT suppliers in a single week in 2013, compared to £87 million spent with 270 firms through G-Cloud over the entire year, according to the report.

However, Heaf said: “It is important to remember that G-Cloud is more than just about sales. Both G-Cloud and the Digital Services framework are programmes with the potential to radically transform the way that central government and the wider public sector deliver their digital services.

“We are gathering some great case studies which we hope to publish soon showing the full potential of what can be achieved.”

She also pointed to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which will be the first UK local authority to move to a fully cloud-based infrastructure and spent just £100,000 setting it up, partly via solutions purchased through G-Cloud.

Both the CloudStore and the Digital Services Store are due to be replaced by the ‘Digital Marketplace’, which will launch publicly in beta form this autumn, Heaf explained.

A private beta of the new marketplace, which will act as a single online catalogue for the public sector to buy digital and IT services, started on 22 July.
