How to use Windows 8.1 Update

Boasting vast improvements in speed and reliability, recently launched Windows 8.1 Update is already making waves in the enterprise.

According to a Microsoft blog, one of the important enhancements is the introduction of 'Enterprise Mode' for Internet Explorer 11, which provides better compatibility with older versions of the browser, adding tools to manage the web apps that use it.

On top of this, the enhanced operating system (OS) comes with improvements in personalisation, search, the Windows Store, and cloud connectivity.

Windows 8.1 Update policies

It is important for Windows 8.1 users to migrate to Windows 8.1 Update as soon as possible: those that do not install the update will no longer receive patches or security fixes after August. Microsoft has already given enterprise users a three month extension on the deadline to update to Windows 8.1 Update (see blog).

So if you are running Windows 8.1, how do you upgrade?

When you log onto your PC, the 'Details' link from the update and recovery screen, warns: "You must install Windows 8.1 Update to ensure that your computer can continue to receive future Windows Updates, including security updates."

By clicking the 'Support' info link, you will access a Microsoft Knowledge Base article, which states: "All future security and non-security updates for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 require this update to be installed. We recommend that you install this update on your Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer in order to receive continued future updates."

What if I'm running Windows 8?

Windows 8.1 users must migrate to Windows 8.1 Update as soon as possible. However, Windows 8 users aren't required to update immediately in order to continue to receive patches for the Microsoft OS. Additionally, Windows 8 users have just over two years to move to Windows 8.1 to continue to be supported under the Windows 8 lifecycle.
