Cambridge University Press rolls out cloud-based Workday HR

The oldest publisher in the world, Cambridge University Press (CUP), has selected DayNine Consulting to roll out a cloud based Human Capital Management (HCM) system provided by Workday.

Established in 1534 by Henry VIII, CUP has more than 50,000 titles in its back catalogue and produces more than 2,500 titles a year. The HCM tool will manage information for over 2,000 CUP employees at 50 offices around the world, creating a “single system-of-record” by centralising all global HR information.

It is hoped that efficiencies will be gained by moving away from disparate systems and that CUP will see benefits arise from creating a single source of its employee data.

CUP aims to go live with the cloud-based HCM tool in early 2014.

“As a global publisher with operations around the world, it is essential that we have complete insight to our talented global workforce,” said Cathy Armor, Director for People at CUP.

“It was the global, cloud-based solutions of Workday that best matched our requirements, combined with DayNine’s Workday expertise and proven ability to complete complex, global deployments on time and within budget.”

In similar news, CUP recently told Computerworld UK that it is overhauling its back-end procure to pay and financial systems to create one single, consolidated SAP platform. CUP explained that part of this was to adapt to shifting revenue models in the digital age.

“Leaving aside the cost benefits of having one system instead of 10, along with the simplification we get with support, we will really be in a position to adapt to these new models that are coming through in digital publishing,” said John Rimell, chief architect at CUP.

“For example, we have a print book that is stocked on a shelf, but then we have a website that we sell 12 month subscriptions on, which you then need 12 months' revenue recognition on.”

He added: "Being able to do a single order for all the different types of products and have a back-end that can handle the taxation, revenue recognition, fulfilment across digital platforms, be completely automated, will really open the gates to sales and product and development teams.”
