Ruckus delivers Wi-Fi network to York city centre

The City of York has completed the roll-out of a high speed ‘smart’ wifi network with Ruckus Wireless, providing internet access to residents and millions of visitors in the city centre.

York already had a fibre network in place across the city, with gigabit connections to over 200 locations.  However the City of York council intended to provide outdoor wireless access in the city centre for use by residents and the seven million visitors that arrive each year.

The wireless network allows access across a three locations in the city centre, covering the main shopping street, Rowntree Park, York Museum and other public buildings. One of the aims of the project was also to enable visitors and residents to access a number of council information services via the network.

The council chose managed services provider Pinacl to deliver a variety of Ruckus networking infrastructure, including Ruckus ZoneFlex 7363 dual-band (2.4/5Ghz) indoor 802.11n mid-range access points, and the Ruckus ZoneDirector management platform for monitoring and controlling service delivery.

“With an outdoor focus, this deployment evolved to encompass a city centre Wi-Fi solution that would light up key hotspots in the city centre, with a view to joining them together to provide complete Wi-Fi coverage across as much of the city as possible,” said Roy Grant, head of ICT, City of York Council.

“With that in mind, one of our key requirements was for scalability so that we can avoid having to reinvest in core infrastructure in the future.”

All three sites were installed, up and running in the space of a few days, accessing power supplies in the city’s lamp-posts. Since installation the wireless network has received one million hits in the first three months of operation.

Earlier this year Ruckus announced that it had supplied the infrastructure to set up an outdoor wireless network along 44km of the River Thames in London.
