Government appoints new deputy CIO

Liam Maxwell, director of ICT futures at the Cabinet Office, has been appointed as the UK government's new deputy CIO.

He fills a role that was left vacant by Bill McCluggage, who announced his resignation as deputy CIO last November, for a move to technology vendor EMC.

Instead of appointing a new director of ICT futures at the Cabinet Office, a spokesperson confirmed that Maxwell will continue with his current responsibilities in the new role. A firm date for when Maxwell will start working as deputy CIO has not yet been decided.

Maxwell will report to government CIO Andy Nelson, who was previously CIO at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), and ultimately to Ian Watmore, Cabinet Office permanent secretary.

An Oxford University graduate, Maxwell joined the Cabinet Office in July 2011. Prior to this, he was head of computing at Eton College for nearly seven years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Maxwell's other former roles included head of IT at Capita Resourcing, between 2001 and 2004.
