HP expands laptop battery recall

HP has recalled 162,000 lithium-ion batteries used in its own brand and Compaq laptops, adding models to a list released last week.

The announcement, with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, comes after HP received 40 reports of laptop batteries that have overheated and ruptured over the last year. Seven people have received burn injuries, and 36 have complained of damage to their property.

The laptops affected include those manufactured between July 2007 and May 2008. HP had recalled 54,000 defective batteries in May last year, and 70,000 a year before that. Five percent of HP laptops included in the recall programme contained defective batteries.

HP has advised customers to check their laptops against the list, even if their machines were not part of previous recalls.

The Consumer Product Safety website and the HP Notebook PC Battery Pack Replacement Programme website lists all laptop model numbers and battery bar codes affected.
