Best word processor for Mac

There are several word processor options available to Mac users, from the basic TextEdit to Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

Microsoft Word

Although Mac users may have had difficulty with Microsoft Word in the past, it seems that the processor is now one of the best options for Apple machines.

Microsoft Word for Mac offers full support for Retina displays and multi-touch gestures. It also includes a Smart Look Up feature, which allows users to access information from the internet from a term or phrase selected in a document.

It also offers integration with Microsoft Office 365 online, enabling users to access documents in iOS from the web browser.

Microsoft Word for Mac is available as part of Office 365 Personal at £59.99 a year or £5.99 per month or users can opt for Office 365 Home at £59.99 a year or £7.99 per month.

Office 2019 is now available for Windows and Mac, priced at £119.99.

Google Docs is a free, cloud-based word processor which is supported by various systems. It is a popular option for many as it enables users to work on documents from wherever they are logged into their Google account.

It is also a good choice for businesses as it offers a collaborative tool, which means multiple users are able to work on a shared document and can identify changes made to the document in real time.

Due to its cloud-based function, Google Docs saves changes automatically as you type so there is never any worry of forgetting to save your work if the network fails.

Although Google Docs does not provide a wide variety of templates, it is a good choice for written text for sharing amongst teams, lists, blog posts and others.

Google Docs is free for individual users but will cost businesses around £6.60 a head as part of a G Suite subscription, which comes with other apps and free storage.

FreeOfficeprovides a complete suite of office software, complete with word processor. It includes all the essentials, and the TextMaker interface is designed to easily create interactive documents with fields and bookmarks that can be saved as PDFs. It also includes graphics and drawing features, as well as automatic spell-check in 58 languages.

The latest suite, FreeOffice 2018, enables users to save documents in Microsoft document file formats of DOCX, XLSX and PPTX.

FreeOffice 2018 is available for free download on macOS 10.10 or higher.

NeoOffice

NeoOfficeis an office suite for Mac, based on OpenOffice and LibreOffice. This enables amendments and savings of all OpenOffice, LibreOffice and Microsoft Office documents.

Unlike OpenOffice and LibreOffice, NeoOffice offers native file locking, which helps to secure files in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or network drives. It also includes a text highlighting feature, that is compatible with PDFs and Microsoft Word files.

The NeoOffice Viewer is free to download but does not include the option to save files. NeoOffice Professional Edition costs £13 for download.

Pages

Pages

Pages is Apple’s alternative to Microsoft Word, available on all iOS devices.

It supports Microsoft Word formats as it enables users to save all documents as Word files or import or edit Word documents from Pages.

Pages offer real-time collaboration for all files saved in iCloud or Box. This allows colleagues and team members to work together in the same document, with edits shown in real-time.

Pages is available for free as part of Apple’s iWork software suite.

Apache OpenOfficeprovides a free word processor feature, called Writer, for tasks from taking notes to long documents, diagrams and more.

Like proprietary versions, it has a built-in AutoCorrect dictionary for quickly identifying and correcting mistakes as you type.

OpenOffice Writer also supports .odt (OpenDocument), .docx and .doc formatted files so that all files created with Microsoft Office 2007 and 2008 for Mac OS X can be accessed.

Users are able to make new documents available in HTML, PDF or MediaWiki formats. It includes a PDF export feature that allows for customising PDFs.

LibreOffice Writer

LibreOffice is a free open source software tool available for Mac OS, Windows and Linux operating systems.

It has full support for .doc and .docx files, enabling users to access these types of files and work on them without any issues. LibreOffice Writer also supports over 100 languages.

There are two versions of LibreOffice Writer, which include similar feature interfaces as Microsoft Word. It also includes wizards which allow you to set up templates for document types such as letters, memos and more.

Both LibreOffice Writer versions support various file formats and can also export documents to PDF format without the need to install additional software.

Scrivener is a word processor designed by Literature and Latte for Mac, iOS, Windows and Linux operating systems. It is available for download from the Mac App Store for £43.99.

The latest version for Mac, Scrivener 2.8, is designed for long-form writing documents which includes a virtual corkboard for users to organise their ideas and rearrange segments.

Scrivener offers a non-linear approach, meaning users are able to start writing anywhere and move it where they would like later. It also has a file browser and research tab to have all the research kept in the app.

The processor also provides templates for screenplays, fiction and non-fiction manuscripts.

iA Writer

iA Writer was one of the first word processor apps offered on Mac App Store, and has since remained one of the best for Mac users. It is available for download for £9.99.

The main feature is its focus mode, which provides an automatic scroll of the text as the user types, with the sentence or paragraph being typed appearing at the centre of the screen.

iA Writer is described as a minimalist writing app, which enables it to support Markdown, a feature that allows users to format text by typing characters.

iA Writer also provides a document library, with hooks to Wordpress and Medium. This means that users are able to write the text in iA Writer then have it uploaded as a draft to Wordpress or Medium automatically.

Last but not least is WPS Office Free, a similar alternative to Microsoft Word with cloud storage and support of all text files.

The free office software tool includes Writer, presentation and Spreadsheet and PDF tools. Its provided Docer library provides a selection of free templates.

WPS Office also provides a PDF to Word converter tool which is included with its latest update, providing easy access for users of the word processor.

A key feature in WPS Office is the multiple document tabs available, enabling users to switch between documents easily.
