A PDF editor can be an essential tool for businesses and individual users alike as the Portable Document Format (PDF) slowly replaces hard copies of documents in business environments.

The big name tools that users tend to go for are from the likes of Adobe, Nuance and Nitro, who all offer great PDF editors. However, there are others to choose from.

Users can access ApowerPDF online or download as a desktop function. Pricing starts from $59.95 (£46) for the personal plan and $159.99 (£124) for the business plans, it also offers monthly and yearly subscriptions.

It offers a simple user interface and acts as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat, available in free, standard and pro versions.

Users can easily display, review and annotate PDF documents with text, graphics and markups with the ability to convert to Microsoft Word, Excel and Text file format.

Pricing starts at $89 (£69) for the standard version and $129 (£100) for the pro version. PDF Studio is available in six languages.

Nuance Power PDF 3is the latest version of Nuance’s Power PDF software, released in June 2018. It builds on popular features from previous versions.

It promises increased conversion accuracy, document compatibility, enhanced productivity and user experience, simplified editing and DocuSign secure document workflow integration.

Nuance Power PDFis the older editor tool that enables users to edit, convert and annotate PDF documents on Windows.

The service also provides users with a unique feature: voice note recognition technology, enabling users to speak to add notes to a file rather than typing.

Nuance Power PDF offers standard and advanced options, with advanced features including the option to redact sensitive information from documents.

Pricing for Nuance Power PDF standard costs £70, whilst Power PDF advanced costs £106 per license.

Power PDF Advanced 3 software costs £154.99 and Power PDF Standard 3 costs £94.99 per license for individuals and small workgroups.

Foxit PhantomPDFis a cloud-based PDF editor that offers a modern and user-friendly interface, allowing business professionals to transform the way documents are managed and modified.

It is powered by ConnectedPDF edge technology, which includes high security and collaboration features. The service also allows users to create PDF documents, forms and portfolios along with the opportunity to edit scanned PDFs.

Phantom PDF is available for a 14-day free trial. The standard service costs $129 (£100) and the business service is $159 (£123). There is also an education service available for students to subscribe from £7.79 a month.

PDF Expertis a PDF editing app available for Apple’s MacOS and iOS platforms. It is a user-friendly app for simple read, annotate and edit actions for PDF documents.

The editor can be used for any PDF document including CVs and invoices, with smart features such as sign, touch bar support and export annotations.

Pricing is £77.99, which includes a license for usage on three Mac operating systems.

Free word processor AbleWord also offers a PDF editor that provides precise text alignment and rotation.

The editor appears as accurate as the original document, more so if the original document was created using the Word Doc from AbleWord.

Its user interface is quite similar to Microsoft Office and is available on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and later versions.

PDF-XChangeoffers both a free and paid PDF editor, with all the full features of a PDF editor included.

The free version offers many of these features; however, users are required to have a licence to access the more advanced features. One downfall is the free version includes a watermark on all edits.

These features include the option to add audio comments, auto-highlights and document spellchecker with the support of Google Drive, Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint.

PDF-XChange allows users to load files from a PC, URL, SharePoint, Google Drive or Dropbox. It supports Windows XP and later versions.

DocHubis another free PDF editor which includes Google and Dropbox integration. It allows users to open and import files directly from Gmail or Google Drive.
