There's a wealth of useful apps designed for IT professionals out there, offering remote server access, Wi-Fi scanners and community forums (to name a few). We've recommended 20 handy iPhone apps to try this year.

Spiceworks, a well-known online community for IT professionals, offers a mobile app enabling access to its community forums and discussions, for free.

This iPhone app, used by over 1 million IT pros worldwide, enables users to view their network inventory and open a ticket for any existing issues, offer help to others in the community and update information on their Spiceworks account.

GoToMyPC

GoToMyPC

GoToMyPC is a remote desktop service that allows access to computers through a web browser such as Chrome or Safari.

Released in 1998, GoToMyPC is almost entirely controlled from a web browser interface. It is feature-rich offering file transfer, easy access to remote machines as well as instant messaging between colleagues.

Available on iOS, it also has a desktop shortcut which lets you gain access or share control of your PC, from any location.

Pingdom

Pingdom

Pingdom offers IT pros insight into the uptime, downtime, and overall performance of their website.

Pingdom will view the current status and response times for each site and provide notifications, root-cause analysis and quick switches between accounts, if needed.

VNC Viewer

VNC Viewer is a remote desktop service that gives you access to your Mac and iPhone devices.

It allows you to view your computer remotely as well as control your mouse or keyboard from any location. Also, it lets you connect directly to VNC with an Enterprise subscription or from third parties such as Apple Screen Sharing by entering the remote computer’s IP address.

In terms of security it password protects each remote computer with users having to enter their user name and password each time they log in. VNC has three versions including – home, professional and enterprise with prices varying on how many device you want to access.

ITmanager.net offers all-in-one tools for network administrators to securely monitor and manage a variety of enterprise-level servers including VMware, Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, XenServer, Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Hyper-V, Active Directory, SSH, Telnet, Amazon Web Services and Apple Remote Desktop (to name a few).

TeamViewer: Remote Control

TeamViewer is a well-known app which lets you connect to a remote PC and view your files from almost anywhere.

Available on iOS, it also offers desktop sharing for online meetings and web conferencing as well as file transfer between computers. In terms of security, TeamViewer encrypts files with a 256-AES with multi-factor authentication and file backup, great for protecting company data.

Its management feature lets you add users and devices to your company, share groups and delegate access to computers. Also, it has instant messaging service which allows you to create group chats, view conversation history and chat offline.

The only downside is that it doesn’t allow you to send email invitations to take over your machine, unlike GoToMyPC and LogMeIn, which is useful for getting support on your iPhone. TeamViewer has three pricing plans including – business, premium and corporate with prices varying depending on user licences.

Simply, Mocha VNC lets you connect to a Mac or Windows PC and view its files and programs on your iPhone.

Mocha VNC includes fast Mac OS X login, encrypted password login, a camera barcode scanner, 8-and 32-bit colour modes, local mouse support and standard VNC (virtual network computing) protocol.

Speedtest.pro enables users to test the speed of their Wi-Fi connection and add results to a general database for analysis in (they claim) under 20 seconds.

This app tracks past speeds, calculates how long file transfers will take and compares the data with other networks.

It's a simple app, but very useful to determine what's slowing a network down and calculating how much time should be set aside for large data downloads or transfers.

Parallels Access

Another popular choice for remote access is Parallels Access, which lets you view your applications, files and devices, all in one place.

Its search feature allows you access to the cloud while also integrating with Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive, to share files. Also, it enables you to view files while working offline, great for those working on trips abroad.

Parallel Access takes care of your work schedule by categorising tasks in order of size or name as well as move, copy or delete files.

iWork is a suite of applications designed for Apple users aiming to replace the need for Microsoft Office.

iWork includes Pages, Keynote and Numbers which allow users to create a variety of documents on their iPhones. All documents can be saved via iCloud and can be easily accessed across all Apple devices.

Network Analyzer

Network Analyzer

Network Analyzer allows you to test Wi-Fi signals, run speed tests and identify risks on remote servers.

It’s ‘discovery’ tools lets you scan LAN device’s addresses and names, as well as digital living network alliance (DLNA) services they provide.

This tool has a port scanner which helps users to measure the closed, firewalled and open ports. Also, it lets you test both download and upload speeds and view speed history.

It also lets you scan devices that are connected to the hotspot, however, user reviews have commented on no Bluetooth connectivity or information on near field communication (NFC).

RSA SecurID

RSA SecurID is a two-factor authentication application that generates one-time passwords which lets you use a PIN and OTP to access your documents and data.

This app is based on 'Token' software which you'll need to import separately by using a QR code.

Additionally, you'll also need a RSA Authentication Manager or the RSA SecurID Authentication Engine API to be able to use this app for software token provisioning and user authentication purposes.

Advanced IP Scanner

Available on iOS, IP Scanner is part of the Macintosh application. It is a well-known scanning tool that allows you to check the quality of your Wi-Fi.

This tool lets you import and export scans via email or Bonjour, view your scanning history and receive customised alerts. Also, it allows you to save and import custom device lists as well integrate them with services such as iCloud or Dropbox.

Comprised of 32 individual tools, this iPhone app scans and analyses local or public networks for security issues or incorrect configurations.

Other notable tools include FTP and SFTP clients, IP calculation, HTTP browser, mail server check, socket analysis and terminal tool, ping IP or domain and map search.

Developed for network administrators and IT managers, LANScan offers a Wi-Fi network scanner.

The tool provides information about all the devices on a local network, allowing users to drill down into the network providing TCP Connect scanning, ARP scanning, port scanning, information on devices broadcasting Bonjour services, reverse DNS and remote 'wake' devices configured to LAN.

Ideal for receipts, notes, invoices, meeting notes, business cards and certificates, this app can integrate with Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, OneDrive and Box and sync across multiple devices.

CamScanner does offer a basic version for free with 200MB of cloud storage for up to 10 people and a premium option providing an additional 10GB of cloud data for up to 50 people.

Active Directory Assist

For those working with Microsoft's Active Directory, Active Directory Assist enables users to view and manage users, groups, and computers from their iPhone.

Users can remotely reset passwords, edit user accounts and group memberships and perform other admin tasks. Active Directory Assist supports compatible with Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 and can directly connect to the Active Directory server via Wi-Fi or VPN.
