14 things you may have missed from Apple’s iPhone event

A few things you might not have noticed...

I thought I’d avoid the “hands-on” battle of trying to wax lyrical about new Apple kit on the basis of a 10-minute Apple demo in order dig out a few interesting facts you might have missed.

You can use third-party controllers with Apple TV

Confirmation Apple TV would play games forced Apple critics to quickly slam the included remote control as unsuitable for gaming. In fact, Apple TV is compatible with MiFi gaming controllers from third-party manufacturers and developers can choose to make their games only playable using these controllers. The first supported remote, the SteelSeries Nimbus, is available now and costs $69.95

Apple TV & Siri

Siri support will be limited to eight countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, the UK and the US. Only customers purchasing an Apple TV in those countries will receive a Siri Remote. Buying elsewhere? It’s the traditional Apple TV Remote for you. Older Apple TVs won’t run tvOS.

Here comes the Apple SIM

Initially available in the U.S. and intended for international markets in future, Apple’s new iPhone Upgrade Program offers you a new iPhone each year (and AppleCare+ coverage) from just $32.41/month. You can migrate between carriers as, and when, you wish, giving you complete freedom to hook yourself up with the best available rates – not bad when the top of the range iPhone 6s Plus costs just $44.91/month (plus carrier fees). I think this is a big step forward for the Apple universal SIM (and opens the possibility of the company as an MVNO in future).

Smaller, longer

The new iPhone 6S battery is smaller than the one included inside the previous iPhone, 1,715mAh, rather than 1,810mAh. However, Apple claims the battery life you’ll get from both devices will be identical -- up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of data usage on 3G, 10 hours on LTE, 11 hours on Wi-Fi and 10 days of standby for both models.

Wireless Ethernet

9to5Mac claims the new Apple TV’s 802.11ac WiFi actually offers faster throughput than you’ll get using the Ethernet port.

iCloud storage price slash

Though it hasn’t increased its free 5GB per customer allocation (boo!), Apple has made iCloud storage a little more affordable. The new pricing should be available from Sept. 16.

Old tariff:

  • $0.99/m for 20GB
  • $3.99/m for 200GB
  • $9.99/m for 500GB
  • $19.99/m for 1TB.

New tariff:

  • $0.99/m for 50GB
  • $2.99/m for 200GB
  • $9.99/m for 1TB.

Pages, Keynote

Interestingly neither of Apple’s own productivity apps were updated at an event where Microsoft Office shared the stage.

Live Photo

Apple’s iPhone photography improvements deserve an article of their own (in production) but what I like about the new Live Photo feature is that you can set one of these moving images as your Apple Watch face.

Image stabilization

Image stabilization is still only available in the iPhone 6S Plus, but now works for video as well as still photos.

Developers can create Universal apps to run on all Apple devices.

Some Apple stats:

  • Customer satisfaction for Apple Watch is 97 percent
  • The new A9 chip is 70 percent faster than the A8
  • The new A9x chip is 1.8 times faster than the A8X processor
  • It’s also 90 percent faster at GPU tasks.
  • Touch ID is twice as fast
  • iPhone sales grew at 3.5 times the rest of the industry

The Apple Stylus aka “Pencil” may or may not have made Steve Jobs stir slightly but will probably see lots of use among designers, architects, engineers. The snag is you need to keep lead (power) in your pencil. Not only can you charge Apple Pencil using the Lightning connector on the iPad, but you get 30-minutes use from just 15-seconds of charging.

What does it say about Apple that the company installed and changed everything (structure, seating, signage) inside the Bill Graham Center for the launch event?

Mac OS X Capitan ships at month's end

Apple will ship OS X Capitan on September 30.
