You get what you measure. Guess what we measure?

This pilot fish is trying to use a new application, but it fails to log in to the server.

"Being an IT tech for 20 years, I do the initial troubleshooting myself," fish says. "When I do a traceroute to the application server, it dies at the firewall. At least now I know which help desk to call.

"Service desk tech asks some initial questions, and I tell him my traceroute results. At that point, he says my problem is that the application's password is being rejected, and I should call the application help desk to get my password checked.

"If it can’t get past the firewall, as reported by the traceroute command, how does the application server know what the password is to reject it?"
