Lucky for us, ZipRecruiter is here to share the inside scoop. This, we already know: On average a hiring manager or screener spends 6 seconds reviewing a resume before sorting it into Keep or Toss piles. ZipRecruiter says it's 7 seconds, so we'll go with that for now because, hey, more time.

Regardless, your resume is not being read on a first pass, it's being skimmed. Here's ZipRecruiter’s advice to managers on how to skim a resume:

"If your job posting included mandatory qualifications, look for those and nothing else to begin with. An applicant who doesn’t have a college degree for a position that requires one isn’t going to get an interview, so you don’t need to spend any more time than it takes you to note the lack of this qualification on his or her resume. If the candidate passes the first stage, set the resume aside or look for other qualifiers: a well-written resume might be the next thing you look for."

So there you go. You know you're supposed to craft a new version of your resume for every job you're eyeing. This is proof you should ensure you place those "mandatory qualifications" in prime resume real estate to make them stand out.

Another smart move: When you're revising your resume, go through the job posting and see which words are mentioned prominently and/or frequently and make sure you use them where applicable (and truthful).
