New, thinner iPhones

Apple calls it "Thinnovation", but the company does get a pat on the back for being consistent in making our iPhones smaller and smaller until they do eventually disappear.... All good so far, but what's the battery life? Apple promises 3G talk time of up to 24-hours on Plus and 14 hours on iPhone 6. Or 16- and 10-days on standby, respectively.

In addition to making the new phones thinner, Apple also rounded off the corners in the new design and changed the control buttons on the side of the phone. Apple has also moved the power/lock key from the top of the phone to the right hand side to increase the ease of use when operating the phone with only one hand.

iOS 8 -- the great enabler

Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 8, ships two days before the new iPhone 6 models. It includes new message and photo features, predictive typing, support for third-party displays, new HealthKit and HealthKit app features for consumers and over 4,000 new APIs (including payment solutions) for developers. We should see a range of exciting new apps appear after it ships Sept. 17.

The updated iSight camera

Apple stuck with an 8-megapixel camera in its new phones, but it applied software improvements designed to make the camera more effective. Apple says its camera captures 80% more light, so you should gather better quality images than before.

Both phones offer image stabilization, with the iPhone 6 Plus including something Apple calls Optical Image Stabalization, resulting in clearer images. The cameras will also be better at detecting faces.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay is Apple's realization of the years it has spent planning to turn your iPhone into your wallet. At its simplest, it works like this: Take a picture of your card. Apple will communicate with the card provider to verify that the card is in fact yours, and after it has been approved, the card is added to Passbook and made available to use. To use the card, just hold your phone over a sensor and place your finger on a fingerprint sensor to confirm the purchase. And if you happen lose your phone, you won't need to replace your card.

Apple Watch apps

The Apple Watch is iteratively innovative -- how else might you characterize the design of the device, which pays homage to traditional watch design with the use of the watch switch? Now called the Digital Crown, this traditional element lets you switch between apps and functions.

Apple's Watch wears its Digital Crown

The Apple Watch Digital Crown is the equivalent of the iPod Click Wheel or Multi-Touch on the iPhone. It lets you move between apps and functions on your timepiece without getting in the way of your display. To control apps you use the display's Force Touch feature, which senses the difference between a tap and a press. It also supports Siri.

U2 -- and some free music

Apple showed a little of the rock 'n' roll reach it now has following the Beats purchase when it put U2 on stage at its iPhone 6/Apple Watch event -- but it showed this even more when it made the band's latest album available almost immediately for free to every iTunes user.
