Sun, EDS to co-market products, services

Sun Microsystems Inc. and Plano, Texas-based Electronic Data Systems Corp. today announced a co-marketing agreement that they estimate will generate $3 billion in sales over the next five years.

As part of the "Sun-EDS Continuum of Services" program, Sun will provide hardware, software and architecture, and EDS will provide services such as systems implementation, integration, consulting and outsourcing, the companies said in a statement. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The joint initiative will be focused at large corporate customers, the companies said, and provides direct competition with IBM.

Contributions from Sun will include Sun Enterprise servers, Sun StorEdge products, the Sun Open Net Environment architecture, Java technology (as well as Java technical consulting) and iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions software, Sun and EDS said.

Specifically, the companies will work jointly on development, promotion, marketing, revenue targets, planned cross-training and account planning and will share development and marketing strategies, they said.
