Brief: Unisys, air cargo carriers launch Cargo Portal Services

Unisys Corp. and three major air cargo carriers said that their new cargo portal, Cargo Portal Services (CPS), is now open and ready for business.

The portal, which was first announced last May (see story), was formally launched yesterday by Blue Bell, Pa.-based Unisys, along with Montreal-based Air Cargo Canada, Chicago-based United Air Lines Inc.'s Cargo Division and Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines Cargo.

CPS will offer easy access to booking, shipment management and communication for forwarders in their daily contacts with a variety of carriers. It's also designed to save them money by eliminating certain expenses and cutting many other transaction costs, according to the companies.

With improved integration of forwarder and carrier computer systems, forwarders will benefit from more synchronized services and improved data accuracy, which is key to providing better control of systems and processes, they said.

The service will be free to freight forwarders. The airlines will pay a quarterly subscription fee to Unisys for a set number of transactions.

The carriers said they are introducing CPS to their global freight forwarder customers.
