Technology drives business value in many companies, but at Penn National Insurance, technology is the key component in growing the business. The Harrisburg, Pa.-based insurer also prefers to build most of its systems in-house and buy components only when necessary, which makes techies salivate.

"Most IT guys want to use creativity and innovation to build a cutting-edge system. This company allows us to do that," says Web developer Kevin Kauffman, a 10-year veteran.

Kauffman is one of the lead designers and developers of a new Web-based quoting system that's driving growth for the entire corporation. The project is in its fourth year and includes a team of 50 IT staffers.

When it comes to career options, "there's an abundant opportunity for advancement if you want it," Kauffman says. "You just have to take the bull by the horns."
