To publicize Web services, Amazon holds contest for start-ups

Entrants can win $100K in cash, Amazon investment offer

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a contest for start-up companies that use its Web services to build their infrastructure and business.

Companies with ideas for using AWS or that already have existing AWS applications can enter the AWS Start-Up Challenge to win $100,000 in cash and AWS credits, and receive an investment offer from Amazon, according to a statement from AWS.

AWS offers developers access to Amazon's technology infrastructure, including Amazon Simple Storage Service and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, which is designed to make Web-scale computing easier for business without having to use their own infrastructure, AWS said.

Entrants will be judged on originality and creativity, the potential success of their ideas, how well their concepts address a need and the implementation of pay-as-you-go AWS.

Entries from developers, entrepreneurs and start-ups are due by Oct. 28. A panel of Amazon judges will then review the applications and select five finalists, who will be announced in November. Amazon said it will also produce a video of each finalist to post on so the AWS community can vote for their favorite start-up.

For the final round, AWS will fly the finalists to Amazon's Seattle headquarters so they can present their ideas to the judges. Finalists will also pitch their business to venture capitalists, meet with industry leaders and Amazon executives, and be featured at the AWS Start-Up Challenge Awards Dinner, where AWS will announce the grand prize winner.

Prizes include $50,000 in cash, a $50,000 credit toward AWS, an investment offer from Amazon, as well as mentoring sessions from an AWS technical expert, according to AWS. All contestants with qualified entries will receive up to $25 for their use of AWS during the contest. The credit will be applied against actual use by the entrant of paid AWS from Sept.1 to Dec. 31, 2007.
