Avaya names networking industry veteran Kevin Kennedy CEO

Charles Giancarlo will move from the CEO post to chairman

Avaya Inc. on Thursday said Kevin Kennedy, currently CEO of JDS Uniphase Corp., will take over as CEO of Avaya in January.

Avaya CEO Charles Giancarlo will become chairman of the Avaya board once Kennedy arrives, the company said in a statement.

Giancarlo said Kennedy has a "deep understanding" of the communications industry for large business customers, as well as extensive senior management experience.

Giancarlo said Kennedy will further Avaya's strategy "to be the premier enterprise communications partner for our customers."

Giancarlo once served in the No. 2 position at Cisco Systems Inc., widely acknowledged as the largest supplier of routing, switching and other communications products to large businesses. Kennedy also spent eight years at Cisco, finishing as senior vice president of the service provider line of business.
