Opinion: Mac advertising masterpieces and missteps

A dozen dazzling and dopey Mac ads from the past 25 years

Two boring guys

Year: 1993

This PowerBook ad looks like an early version of the "I'm a Mac; I'm a PC" ads, only with two PCs. (Actually, John Hodgman's PC has way more personality than either of these guys.) Were either of these guys ever cool, even in 1993?

What vision of Mac ownership does this ad present? You can be stuck in an airport trying to get some work done while balancing your briefcase on the next seat; or you can be a guy like Michael Scott from The Office, smugly flaunting your IT smarts. It's hard to believe that there was a period when "cool" wasn't part of Apple's marketing vocabulary.
