Adult video content on tablets to triple by 2015

Privacy of tablets and large screens combine to make devices attractive to buyers of the content

Fueled by an increasing number of tablet computers, the number of users of adult video content on tablets is expected to triple by 2015, Juniper Research said Monday.

The number of subscribers of mobile adult content and mobile adult videochat sites is also expected to triple in that time frame, Juniper said in a statement that highlighted findings of a156-page study it first published in May.

By 2015, adult videochat is expected to account for half of mobile adult content revenue.

"Tablets combine the privacy of a smartphone with a large screen, particularly suited for content consumption," said Charlotte Miller, a Juniper analyst who authored the study. "It is clear that, as with many other types of content, users of mobile adult content will want to access content on their tablets as well as on smartphones and PCs."

Juniper said one third of subscriptions to adult content will be from tablet users by 2017. When tablets are combined with smartphones and other handsets, the total market for adult content on mobile devices will reach $1.5 billion in 2017, more than triple the $462 million in 2012.

More than 70% of that total will come from Western Europe and North America, Juniper said.

Tablet users are more affluent than smartphone users, and are also more likely to use a credit card to purchase content.

Juniper didn't reveal all the details of its study, which is on sale for 2500 British pounds.

Miller's findings are consistent with what many analysts would expect.

She noted that the adult content industry is one of the largest in the world, with an estimated overall annual sales of $100 billion. In an extract of her report, she noted that the recession of the late 2000s did hinder sales adult content, as did competition from free content.

Noting that the adult content industry has "always been an early adopter of new technology," the extract added, "it should come as no surprise that ... the first iPad-optimized adult entertainment sites were launched before the iPad reached the hands of consumers."

Miller profiled a dozen vendors of mobile adult content, and provided case studies of Adultmoda, AEBN/Xobile, FriendFinder Networks, GetJar, Mikandi and Spankmo.
