Firefox keeps on growing and growing and growing and...

It's IT Blogwatch: in which Mozilla's Firefox Web browser continues to gain market share, smashing records as it does so. Not to mention the objects in the mirror that aren't closer than they appear...

Gregg Keizer reports:

Mozilla Corp. used the launch of Firefox 3.0 last month to boost its browser market share to over 19% ... Most of Firefox's overall gains appeared to come from rival Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer (IE), according to data from Net Applications, although the newest version's growth was primarily because of users updating from Firefox 2.0. Other browsers, including Apple Inc.'s Safari and Opera Software ASA's Opera, also gained ground in June ...  As was the case last month, Firefox's June share was a new record for the open-source browser, which has been on a two-month climb after being interrupted in April when its share slipped somewhat. Last month's increase was nearly equal to the increase of the month before, which in turn had been the largest for Firefox since December 2007. Safari and Opera also posted record market shares in June ... while IE reached a record low. more
Preston Gralla adds:
Microsoft today announced new security features for Internet Explorer 8, on the same day that a survey shows that Firefox has its biggest share of the browser market ever. As impressive as those new tools are, they won't be able to stop Firefox from continuing to eat into IE's market share ... [IE8's] anti-phishing tool has been beefed up, redesigned, and renamed the SmartScreen Filter, and now protects against downloading files from sites known to harbor malware ... There are a variety of other useful enhancements as well ... [but] they're not enough to hold off Firefox. At this point, Firefox is simply the superior browser. For the last several years, it's been one step ahead of IE ... Of course, even with the latest browser market figures, IE still dominates. But every month, Firefox keeps chipping away. more
Ryan Wagner muses:
Both Opera and Firefox had big releases during the month of June, but neither one was made available until halfway through the month. So we might not be seeing the full results from the new releases. They both still climbed in the overall market share usage for June, and I suspect that July will be an even better month for them ... Overall Windows dropped 0.24% in market share and currently sits at 90.89%, while the Mac is approaching 8% of the total market ... the craziest thing about those stats is the fact that 0.25% are still running Windows ME. Yikes! My condolences go out to those people. more
Tim Russert recalls the browser wars:
The best evidence that Microsoft intended to kill Netscape is how the intervals between versions of Internet Explorer got longer and longer once there was no Netscape Navigator with which to compete. Would there be an IE 7 if there were no Firefox? I think not ... the issue of the moment is standards compliance. Microsoft trumpeted IE 7 for better performance against HTML standards. Unfortunately IE 7 retains most of the “quirks” that have driven web developers nuts. The quirks (some would call them bugs) have remained in the product so long as Microsoft thought that developers would code to the quirks rather than the standards. The ever growing market share of Firefox has changed all that. So, once again, Microsoft is promising “interoperability and compatibility” in IE 8. more
Meanwhile, Mozilla's Mary Colvig celebrates:

Mozilla today received confirmation from Guinness World Records that we’ve officially achieved the record for the “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours.” >From 18:16 UTC on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 UTC on June 18, 2008, 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox 3! This is another wonderful accomplishment in a long line of them for our community! Ever since Firefox was launched in 2004 we’ve relied on our community to help us spread the word, and thanks to projects including crop circles, newspaper ads, giant stickers, videos, blogs and more we now have over 180 million users in more than 230 countries. Incredible work!. more

For this prediction to be judged a success two criteria must be met: Guinness must accept the attempt as an official Guinness World Record ... At least 3 million downloads of Firefox 3 must take place during "Download Day" ... Judgment on July 2, 2008: The record is official, which the community correctly predicted. The outfit which markets the Firefox web browser, the Mozzarella Foundation, has heard from record keepers that it now holds the world record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period ... A big cheese in Mozzarella's marketing department, Paul Kim said that the enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was the key to making this happen. Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records said getting that many downloads down the wire, and getting enough Firebadger fans to do it within the first 24 hours, was no small feat ... At their busiest the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute and it took only five hours for Version 3.0 downloads to exceed the 1.6 million set by Firefox 2.0 in October 2006. Firebadger has 19 per cent of market share making it the second most popular browser after Microsoft's Internet Exploder. more
Michael Learmonth quips:
The record itself is a nifty publicity stunt, though not near as impressive as other Guinness achievements, such as "Most Rattlesnakes Sat In Bathtub With" (87). more
