Microsoft is ramping up its assault on the Macbook Air with a series of ads touting the Surface Pro 3's superiority to Apple's laptop There's just one problem. The Macbook Air is better. Here's why.

Microsoft has several ads aimed at the Macbook Air, each of them focusing on various reasons it claims the Surface Pro 3 is superior. The ads touts things such as the Surface Pro 3's touch screen and pen, and that it is both a tablet and a laptop, as you can see below.

There's no doubt that the Surface Pro 3 is a well-designed, beautiful device, as I write in my review of it. With its 12-inch screen, powerful processor, and with the addition of the Surface Pro Type Cover, you can use it as both a tablet and an ultrabook.

Microsoft has been aiming the Surface Pro 3 at the Macbook Air for quite some time. On the company's Web page touting the Surface Pro 3's specs, it devotes an entire section to comparing the two. Starting in June, it launched a campaign to get people to trade in their Macbook Airs and use the credit towards buying a Surface.

As a laptop, though, the Macbook Air wins. It has a larger screen and a much superior keyboard. And the Surface Pro 3 runs Windows 8, which is far inferior to Mac OS X. If it's a laptop you're interested in, the Macbook Air is certainly the better choice.

If you want a tablet that does double-duty as an ultrabook, and care about a touchscreen, then the Surface Pro 3 may be better for you. But that's not most people. Everyone else will likely opt for a Macbook Air.
