Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and IBM (NYSE:IBM) are climbing into bed together. Better serving big customers is the aim of the game.

Apple Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. are putting aside a rivalry started at the dawn of the personal-computing era. ... Apple’s famous “1984” Super Bowl television commercial to introduce the Macintosh computer compared IBM to George Orwell’s totalitarian Big Brother.

The Apple access to an IBM sales force that will recommend Apple’s devices to customers in industries [that] have never been priorities for the consumer-focused iPhone maker. IBM gets a boost in a long-running effort to sell software and services. ... It puts IBM back in the position of selling consumer products -- something the company left behind in 2005.  MORE

IBM and Apple have forged a pact to tout software to enterprise: Apple will handle support and IBM will sell iPads and iPhones crammed with Big Blue's ported apps. [It] will see each firm help the other make money from a business area it has no particular affinity for. IBM...will "sell iPhones and iPads"...while Apple will handle phone support.

Though we're sure champagne corks will be popping at the respective HQs of IBM and Apple tonight, we reckon there'll be a distinctly different feeling at Microsoft and Google.  MORE
