Google I/O 2013: Live blog and streaming video

Google I/O 2013 Live Blog Streaming Video

Ladies and gentlemen, Google I/O 2013 is here.

Google's annual developers' conference kicks off at 9:00 a.m. PT (12:00 p.m. ET) today. The event opens with a giant two-and-a-half-hour keynote that promises to be jam-packed with juicy Google news.

We're expecting to see a new version of Android along with several additional updates related to the platform. And you can bet there'll be plenty of other surprises.

I'm at San Francisco's Moscone Center watching it all unfold. I'll be providing live play-by-play commentary along with my Computerworld colleage Sharon Gaudin, who's also here on the floor. We'll have live streaming video so you can follow along yourself, too; just scroll down to find it all.

So, are you ready to get Googley? The action's all right here on this page, starting at 9:00 a.m. PT.

UPDATE: The event has come and gone. You can read through the live blog below (it's in reverse chronological order), check out a full video of the keynote at the bottom of the page, or click over to some of my post-keynote coverage:

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

I think it's safe to say that's a wrap. If anything more happens, I'll let ya know. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

We're still dragging along here with the Q&A, folks. Crowd is getting antsy. Been sitting here for coming up on four hours now. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Page mentions a difficult relationship with Oracle. "Money is more important to them than any collaboration." #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

The new Google Music streaming service is now live in the U.S., if you want to try it: @sgaudin

Talking about innovation, Larry Page says, "We're at 1% of what's possible." #io13 #GoogleIO

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Hold on.... Google really isn't going to talk about Glass? Not showing off any new Glass apps? Nothing? Bizarre. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Especially compared to what we saw at I/O last year -- Android 4.1, Nexus 7, Google Glass (and its crazy skydiving debut). #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Not to say there's been nothing important unveiled today. But all subtle stuff, relatively speaking -- no single piece of huge news. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Nothing too notable in the Q&A so far. I'm holding onto hope there might be some big surprise left, but my optimism is fading. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Larry Page is taking questions from the audience. #io13 #GoogleIO

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Larry Page tells Scoble he didn't appreciate the pic of him wearing Glass in the shower. None of us did, Larry. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Page is opening up the floor to questions from the crowd. This is a strange vibe... #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

I/O does run through Fri. But while we'll likely get interesting nuggets in upcoming sessions, the keynote's where big news happens. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Really strange talk from Google's leader. He's not talking Glass or Android. More like talking with him in a hallway or bar. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Larry says innovation is being slowed by the negativity focused on Google and tech in general. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Will be quite the surprise if there's nothing new on Glass, Android, or Nexus devices. But starting to look like it might be the case. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Odd that Larry's not wearing Glass on stage. He seems more focused on being a bit philosophical. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Google just posted a summary of I/O announcements to its blog: @sgaudin

Larry talking about his dad and how he encouraged his son in computers and robotics. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Page is talking about the amazing progression we've seen with technology over the past several years. All general stuff so far. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Larry's voice sounds pretty scratchy. Kudos to him for coming out to talk to this group of developers. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Larry Page's voice sounds noticeably weak today. He talked about the reason why with the NYTimes yesterday: @jr_raphael

Page on stage. #io13 http://pic.twitter.com/zEm11Um1QC

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

There he is. Larry Page makes his way out onto the stage. People starting to wake up now. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Here's something: Larry Page just walked out onto the stage. Thunderous applause. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Hah. If only. (But seriously, there's been time.) #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

This I/O keynote has been going on so long that Verizon might have updated all of its phones to Android 4.2 while we've been in here. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

New Google Maps launching today on the desktop. #io13 #GoogleIO

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Google Maps now maps out the Earth traveling through space with stars in the right position. #io13 #GoogleIO

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

It's possible the Google I/O keynote is just a ruse and we're all being held hostage... #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

This new Maps stuff is nice and all, but we really need a major injection of energy to wrap this thing up. WHERE ARE YOU, SERGEY?!? #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

After last year's Glass-wearing sky divers, this keynote is a bit slow. But how do you top last year? Just don't try? #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

But, considering it's already 11:35 a.m. here -- the time this keynote was supposed to wrap up -- I'm starting to wonder. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

I said before I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't see a new version of Android and a refreshed Nexus 7 this week. That's still true. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Googler says, "This is the new Google Maps" and maybe a dozen people clap. I think everyone has passed out. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Still been no news on Google Glass, no news on Google TV, and no major news on Android software or devices. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

The future of Google Maps --- Build a map for every user that adapts to what you do. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

More people coming out to talk about the future of Google Maps. Yeah -- this thing clearly is running long. #io13 #TheNeverEndingKeynote

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Google Maps' new look is coming this summer. Too bad -- thought it was ready now. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

The new Maps app has a slick-looking tablet-optimized interface, too. #io13 #KeynoteExhaustionSettingIn

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

New Google Maps for mobile includes a new look, a 5pt rating system, Zagat reviews... for Android and iOS. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Confirmed: New Hangouts chat service is coming to Gmail. Per Google: @jr_raphael

Google Maps will now feature integrated Zagat data. Full editorial reviews, scores, etc, right in the app. #io13 Retweeted by sgaudin

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Google Maps will now feature integrated Zagat data. Full editorial reviews, scores, etc, right in the app. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Improved Google Maps experience coming to Android and iOS. #io13 http://pic.twitter.com/qTTexvRWuW

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Talking about Google Maps for iOS, exec says: "and let's not forget, [it's] accurate." Lots of laughter and applause. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Official announcement on the new Google Now and Voice Search stuff is now live here, if you want to read more: @jr_raphael

Map talk. #io13 http://pic.twitter.com/t5glWH5PAj

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Now we're talking about changes coming to Google Maps. We thought a redesign was coming this week. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Moving onto Google Maps now. Likely a whole new version on the way. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

So, if this keynote is running on time, it should be done in about 20 mins. Nothing on Glass yet and nothing big on Android. Hmm... #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Alright Google, the keynote is set to be winding down. Nothing on Glass? Let's get to it. #io13 #GoogleIO

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Ask Google to find the pictures from your trip to NYC, and it will. OK, that's pretty cool. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Google Voice Search can now pull up specific picture sets from your Gallery, too. Nice. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

I'm liking the idea of Voice Search from your desktop. According to the demo, this actually works pretty well. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Still, seeing it work in the desktop environment is awesome. Available soon on Chrome/Chrome OS. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Lots o' clapping at the demo here. This is impressive. Of course, if you use Android now, you already know what it's like. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Okay, this is cool. Google Now/Voice Search in the browser. From a PC, you just say "OK, Google" and ask away. Just like on Android. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

New cards coming to Google Now: set reminders, public transit commute times, music albums, books, TV shows, video games. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Google Now set up to anticipate what you need before you need it. Google should make boyfriends. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

You say, "OK, Google" and ask a question. It gives you an answer. Or potentially slaps you, depending on what you asked (you pervert). #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Conversation search lets you ask a question and Google will speak the answer to you. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Conversational search (i.e. by voice) is now coming to all platforms -- Android, iOS, and Web. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

My current search: "Hey Google, is there any more Android news coming up in this keynote?" No response thus far. Damn. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

In addition to anticipating what you might search for as you type it, Google will now anticipate what you might search for *next*. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Amit Singhai focused on Star Trek-like computers that talk to you when you ask it a question. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Now onto new developments in search. Single keynote = loooong keynote. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

This could be interesting... Google's next topic: The End of Search as We Know It. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

NOTE: There has been no skydiving so far. #io13 #WheresSergey?

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Also has a feature reminiscent of HTC One or GS4, where multiple photos are combined to get a single image where everyone is smiling. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Auto Awesome also will take pics of people not smiling and... presto! There's a pic with them all smiling. Creeeeepy! #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Auto Awesome? New feature takes a few not so great pics of the same thing and turns them into animated gif. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

It's a little silly, but let's be honest: People are gonna love it. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

There's actually a feature called Auto Awesome. I kid you not. It makes an animated GIF from a series of related photos. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

The new photo tool will roll out this afternoon, by the way. It's integrated into Google+. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Google talks about "skin softening" to make you look better in your pics Digital botox?? #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Warning: If you look like Bobcat Goldthwait, the new Google photo tool may not improve your appearance. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Includes skin softening, noise reduction, white balancing, and a bunch of other adjustments -- all automatically applied as needed. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Is your photo over or under exposed? Gundotra says Google will fix that automatically. #io13 #GoogleIO

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

New Auto Enhance feature makes your photos look better without the work, Google says. Figures out what the image needs and does it. #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Google also recognizes who is important to you. Really? I can barely do that some days. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

If you went on a recent spring break trip, you may not want to utilize this feature. #io13 #WhatWillGoogleChoose?

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Gundotra says Google will pick your best pictures, culling out bad exposures and blurry shots. Trustworthy? #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

New Highlight service will allegedly pick the best pictures from your gallery so you don't have to decide which to share. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Onto Google cloud storage. Now 15GB for all users, spread across services (as announced earlier in the week). #io13

Sharon Gaudin ‏@sgaudin

Gundotra: Think of Google's datacenters as your new darkroom. Come on, who still has a darkroom? #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

Also haven't explicitly said if this will show up in Gmail right away or if Gmail's chat function will remain the way it is for now. #io13

JR Raphael ‏@jr_raphael

The service includes video hangouts. They haven't said anything yet about if it'll include or affect Google Voice in any way. #io13
