Gmail 'splains why spam is spam (and no sex for you!)

Gmail now tells you why messages in your spam folder were sent there. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has tweaked its webmail client to display some broad categories of reasons why its spam filters filtered a message that way. In IT Blogwatch, bloggers wonder if it'll make spammers better at avoiding the filters.

    Brennon Slattery reports:

Google has updated the service to explain [why] spam is spam. ... Starting now, when you click on a message in Gmail's spam folder, an explanatory note appears.


If you're like me and simply...ignore the folder altogether, this...may not mean much, but it's good to know that...Gmail has got your back.   

     Meghan Kelly adds:

The feature includes a “learn more” button if you want a deeper dive. ... [It’s] needed education. The other day while on the train, I overheard the couple behind me talking. ... One of them referenced phishing attacks. ... I was surprised when the other passenger replied, “What’s a phishing scam?”


[S]maller urgency problems such as spam pass under the radar...[so] answer[ing], “Why is this spam?” gives people more armor to protect themselves.   

Google's Ela Czajka 'splains:

[We] think you should never have to look in your spam folder, [but] we know some of you may want to know why the messages [are] there.

Robin Wauters talks false positives, then adds a worrying thought:

[One] of the reasons I’m a rabid Gmail fan is its ability to kick junk email straight to...where it belongs. ... I still check the folder regularly...but it’s rare for me to find any emails from real people in there.


Needless to say, [the new feature] will also be useful information for email marketers.   

And David Angotti agrees:

In addition, email marketers can use...the new create campaigns that will be more successful...[by] consider[ing] the “marketing feedback” in the red message boxes and alter the message based on Gmail’s “advice.


[An] email marketer can easily alter the message, mail service, settings, or make other...changes [to] decrease the chances of an email being sent to spam.
