Tim Culpan, Olga Kharif, and Ashlee Vance go all tag-team stylee: Inc. (AMZN) is developing a smartphone...two people with knowledge of the matter said. working with Amazon on the device. ... Amazon declined to comment.

Amazon beefed up its patent prowess recently. ... Adding patents would help Amazon protect itself against lawsuits. ... Amazon has been involved in five patent-related cases this year, and 20 cases last year.

Jon Russell fills in the blanks:

Amazon’s tablet runs a modified version of the...Android operating system and it seems [it] would continue to its cut its own variant...which would presumably also have access to the Kindle app store.

Amazon and Foxconn have a long relationship, although...a different supplier [builds] Kindle Fire. ... Speculation over a Foxconn-built Amazon smartphone surfaced in November.

Todd Bishop moves diagonally:

The company shook up the tablet market with the...Kindle Fire. ... The need to work with wireless carriers could make it tougher to [do that] with a phone. However, the company does have plenty of a retailer through its Amazon Wireless store.

The move would give...Microsoft more competition for the No. 3 spot.

And Dan Frommer suggests a business model:

But why, Clinton Jeff; why?

Sure, why not right?

Amazon does have the infrastructure in place. ... They have an App Store, and they have delivery services. I’d imagine this will be a US-only affair.

At the end of the day, it’s still just another reskinned-Android.

However, Chris Chaves disagrees with that last point:

...but just like the Kindle Fire, all the Google apps...will be ripped from the OS [for] Amazon’s Appstore and media services.

The smartphone market could always use a new contender, would be nice to recommend a heavily “dumbed down” Android device...(I’m sick of being my family’s tech support guy) affordable smartphone for the masses...[but] it’s going to be hard to get the price down below...the $350 Galaxy Nexus.

Meanwhile, Jason Kaneshiro guesses at the next rumor rounds:

  • Microsoft announces...eBook reader.
  • Amazon announces...laptop.
  • Amazon apps that run in the cloud. ...
  • Facebook announces all of the above simultaneously.

And Finally...

It's Wimbleableabledom!
