Android phones sweep Consumer Reports ratings, beat down the iPhone

What are the best phones on the market? Consumer Reports has an answer, and it's an unequivocal one --- those that use Android. The magazine rated phones by carrier, and in every instance Android phones came out on top. Overall, nine of the top 10 phones were Android. The magazine wouldn't even recommend the iPhone 4 because of antenna problems.

The magazine rated the phones based on quite a few criteria, including display, voice quality, ability to navigate the phone, Web browsing, battery life, camera, and more. It then came up with an numeric ranking for each phone, and listed them by carrier. Android made a clean sweep. Here's the breakdown:

- On Verizon, the top four phones are Android --- top-rating Droid X, followed by the Droid 2, HTC Incredible, and LG Ally.

- On T-Mobile, the top two are Android, the top-rated Samsung Vibrant and the HTC myTouch 3G Slide.

- On Sprint, the top three are Android, the top-rated HTC Evo 4G, followed by the Samsung Intercept, and the HTC Hero.

On AT&T, the top one is Android, the Samsung Captivate. The iPhone 3G S came in second, followed by the Android-based HTC Aria at number three.

To add insult to injury for Apple, Consumer Reports won't even recommend buying the iPhone 4. Here's what it has to say:

The iPhone 4 is a fine performer. However, Consumer Reports' tests found that if you touch a gap on the phone's lower left side, you could lose your connection. Apple says to call customer service to request a free bumper to alleviate the problem.

Overall here's how the numeric rankings break down of the top ten phones. Every one is Android-based, except for the iPhone 3G S:

Samsung Captivate 76

Samsung Vibrant 76

Droid X 75

Droid 2 75

Apple iPhone 3G S 74

HTC Aria 74

HTC Droid Incredible 73

LG Ally 72

HTC myTouch 3G Slide 72
