What's wrong with Windows copy and paste?

It can now be revealed: I'm having problems getting the simplest Windows operation of all to function properly --- copy and paste. It turns out that that other Windows experts and regular users are having the same problem as well, so it's clearly not just me. What's wrong with this most basic of Windows functions?

The problem is simple: I highlight text or a graphic, press Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard, then press Ctrl-V to paste it into an application. Usually it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

It's one of those things you don't like to admit. After all, what could be simpler than getting copy and paste to work?

In a recent blog post author and Windows expert Paul Thurrot said that he had the same problem. He added that after a podcsast mentioning the problem, his mailbox was flooded with people who had the same problem.

Then prominent blogger Mary Jo Foley tweeted that she had the same problem as well.

What gives? Does anyone have any thoughts on why this might be happening?
