Timing is everything

This pilot fish's duties include traveling to various company offices around the country, dealing with IT-related problems and running user training sessions.

"A few years ago, we were in the process of implementing Internet filtering, as several offices were complaining that viewing inappropriate Web sites was becoming quite a problem," fish says.

"I was invited to a district meeting to discuss and demonstrate the Internet filtering that was just implemented."

The day of the meeting, fish arrives, sets up a laptop and projector and connects it to the meeting site's internal network.

Then he tests to make sure the filtering is working. He has a particular favorite test site: It should be blocked, but in case it's not, the first thing displayed is a picture of a famous bunny with a bow tie.

But not to worry: The site is blocked, so everything is ready.

The big meeting starts, and the floor is turned over to fish. He launches into his spiel in front of all these directors and managers, explaining the Internet policy and what will happen if they try to surf to a blocked site.

Then he clicks on the link for the test site.

"To my horror, instead of the standard company 'this site is blocked' message, the famous bunny Web site comes up," groans fish.

"Needless to say, the laughter in the room was quite loud as they all had a good sense of humor.

"I picked up the phone and called the home office and talked with the staff responsible for the Internet filtering. Their response: 'Oh, we had to take that offline to do maintenance. Was that big meeting today?"
