The traditional top-down IT planning process was turned on its head at this public university in Bloomington, Ind., when faculty, staff and students recently partnered to develop the institution's five-year strategic IT plan. Knowledge sharing At the university's annual IT Workshops for Teens, staffers help Indiana youth develop math and technology skills. IU's Women in Technology Conference helps inspire young women to pursue careers in IT, and its annual Cybersecurity Conference brings together IT professionals and law enforcement experts to share security research and best practices. A professional development initiative called the IT Leaders Program offers training opportunities for senior and emerging leaders. The program's 133 graduates serve as mentors, coaches and team leaders. Managers find ways to reward outstanding performers with recognition and other noncash incentives, such as access to the latest technology and participation in leadership development opportunities. Staff contributions are celebrated at appreciation events and informal gatherings.
