Employer Profile

No. 67
Transocean Ltd.
Houston, [South Central]
Why You Want to Work There
This deep-water drilling company in Houston has been in the news because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Its IT department, however, has been quietly working behind the scenes to give back to the community by supporting local charities such as Toys for Tots. To further the professional development of staffers, IT managers created a program that identifies individuals' training needs and gives them an opportunity to take classes on the appropriate subjects. Instructor-led classes are available on-site and at a training vendor's facility. Other professional development options include computer based-training, self-paced courses and technical resource guides. Flex schedules: Fridays are half-days here. Regular work schedules include nine-hour workdays Monday through Thursday and four hours on Friday. The IT department has set up a "Wall of Honor" where certificates honoring the outstanding efforts of individual employees are posted. When appropriate, the department recognizes individual excellence with spot awards of restricted shares of stock. Transocean employees who meet their goals are eligible for annual bonuses, and senior IT staffers are eligible for restricted stock awards. In addition to those formal recognition programs, managers regularly acknowledge exceptional performances with trophies, gift certificates and letters of appreciation. Benefits include a 401(k) program with a company match of the first 6% of the employee's contribution, a pension plan, comprehensive medical and dental plans, a tuition reimbursement program, and a long-term incentive plan for eligible managers.
