Norton Healthcare
Louisville, Ky. [South Central]
Why You Want to Work There
Despite the tough economy, this Louisville, Ky.-based health care facility operator hasn't had to lay off any IT employees; it cut spending in areas other than staffing instead. The IT department's RISE (Recognizing IS Employees) committee is made up of staff-level employees who are empowered to change areas of the department that are not working well, recognize the achievements of individuals or teams, and organize departmental social activities. Among other things, the committee has addressed concerns about the appearance of the workspace, organized parties and other events, and set up an employee-of-the-quarter award (a peer-driven award with a $250 cash prize). The company offers a number of wellness-related perks, including nutrition counseling and a variety of exercise classes. Managers allow employees to work flexible schedules to accommodate workouts. Other benefits include adoption assistance, first-time home buyer assistance, pet insurance, flexible spending accounts for dependent care and medical expenses, flexible scheduling options, telecommuting options, retirement benefits and tuition assistance. Your own bonus pool: Managers budget a certain amount of money per employee for bonuses every year, and the managers themselves can decide how to dole it out. Through Norton University, an employee can receive training on topics such as work/life balance, managing a difficult employee or customer service. Also, the company reimburses employees for a portion of the cost of earning a technical certification or a degree if certain objectives are met.
