Why You Want to Work There
Work/life balance is more than a catchphrase at this Newark, N.J.-based life insurer. The company promotes alternative work arrangements and offers services to help employees deal with challenges they might be facing in their personal lives. In 2009, Prudential held an educational seminar called the Work/Life Trends and Strategies Forum that highlighted all of the programs and services available to employees, such as support for elder care, child care, adoption and foster care; health and wellness programs; help setting up household budgets; legal services; mass transit discounts and more. The forum was open to all employees and was available via webcast. The IT organization recently upgraded the company's remote access portal, making it easier for employees to access their e-mail and work files remotely. Communication channels: The CIO hosts an annual event called the Technology Expo where IT employees discuss the latest issues, such as social networking and Prudential's video strategy. The CIO also has an active blog, and the IT department recently launched a company wiki. IT employees volunteer in their communities, giving presentations about technology and educating young people about IT careers. They hold positions on international boards and are members of think tanks. They reach out to high schools and universities to build a pipeline of IT talent, offering internships and mentoring students who are interested in technology. Prudential's Health, Life and Wellness program provides dozens of free or nearly free services to help employees manage their health, manage stress, deal with their finances and help their families. Offerings include on-site health clinics, which offer lab services, medical consultations, physical and mental health screenings, ergonomic consultations, smoking cessation services, weight reduction classes and more. New this year: A Healthy Team Award recognizes teams of employees who work together to achieve wellness goals and make the workplace healthier.
